'The Incredible and the Wonderful' are a fashion trend of the France of the Directory characterized by its dissipation and its extravagances, in reaction to the dark sadness that had spread the Terror.

  6. What a stunning book cover, Sim. It leaves me smiling.
Regarding your problem with English on my play on words: The author's name is Bertha D. Blues ... which is a play on the words "birth of the blues", a term used for the beginnings of that particular music style.

Do you believe in coincidence? Today I was listening to a radio podcast by a university professor who is a specialist in fashions through the ages. The main topic was about Les Incroyables et Les Merveilleuses and he explained how the aristocrats in France realised the way they dressed set them apart from ordinary people and also put them in danger of being captured and killed. I was fascinated listening to this piece of history and then, voila, I saw your wonderful picture.
